Stav uses the sixteen runes of the Danish or Younger Futhork. A futhork is the name for a collection of runes. These collections may also be called futharks. The name futhork is taken from the alphabetic character of the first 6 runes (Fe Ur Thor As Rei Kreft). The fourth rune is taken to be an A or O (as the pronunciation is like Oss), hence the different spellings.

FE , UR , THOR , AS , REI , KREFT , HAGL , NOD , IS , AR , SOL , TYR , BJORK , MANN , LAUG , YR

The younger futhork was in widespread use in Scandinavia from approx. the 9th to the 11th centuries. It’s use declined with the spread of Christianity and the persecution of these ‘pagan’ practices.

The sixteen runes used in Stav are the distilation of ancient knowledge and wisdom. The sixteen runes was the minimum number from which a working system can be formed. Each rune has many associations on many different levels. For example each rune is associated with a Norse god or gods.

A rune can also be associated with various levels or classes used in Stav. It also has a connection with various colours. These are only a few examples, it is fascinating to discover what other connections and associations are revealed by continued study in Stav.

The rune shapes and their names are shown below:

FE UR THOR AS REI KREFT

HAGL NOD IS AR SOL TYR
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
BJORK MANN LAUG YR

The Runes are angular letters that were cut into wood, stone and metal, and later written on parchment and paper.
There is no clear-cut definition for the word, and it seems to be more of a metaphor referring to a mystery, secret or portent, rather than a single word.

Many Runic alphabets existed over the centuries. The one used in the Stav system is the Younger, or Danish Futhork. (Futhork means alphabet). It was developed from the Elder Futhork, went into popular use around the eighth century and has been in continuous use thereafter.

The main use of the Runes in Stav is through the Stances. In addition, each Rune has a wealth of associations connected to it, such as deities, principles, herbs, trees, numerology as well as the many and symbolic meanings of their names. This allows the Runes to be used as refference points to all the principles and philosophies in Stav. It also enables their use as tools for healing and divination.
